Ko`olau Golf Club in Oahu is an award-winning 18-hole championship golf course listed by Golf Magazine as one of the “Top 100 Places You Can Play.” This course is situated on Easter Ko’ olau in a stunning tropical rainforest setting offering a one-of-a-kind Hawaiian golfing experience.
Golfing in the Rainforest
While out on the course, it’s easy to forget that civilization is a short drive away. There are no roads or houses. It’s just the Ko’ olau mountain range, the rainforest and you. The 7,310-yard 18-hole golf course seamlessly incorporates these natural elements in a way you won’t see anywhere else in the world.
The course’s landscape integrates elevation changes, winding ravines, cascading waterfalls, and lush vegetation with holes lined up to the rainforest creating a magical backdrop. The ravines are used as the target for holes and large sand bunkers as deterrents to errant shots.
It requires golfers to be very precise in their placement shots because there are a lot lay ups in the ravines. For instance, on the second hole, from the back tees you’ve got a definite carry of about 240 yards if you want to get to the 150 yard marker. If you decide to lay up, you’ll find yourself on the left side of a ravine and that lay up cuts the fairway down the middle and puts the green 175 yards away which makes for a challenging shot.
Even though the course it set on an island, it does not experience the typical ocean effect or mountain effect. This, too, offers a challenging element to the game as golfers must “read” the green.
Ko’ olau Golf Club
While the Ko’ olau Golf Club has the reputation as one of the most challenging courses in the nation when golfed from the back tees, there are four other sets of tees to match every skill level.
The club was originally built by foreign investors as a private club but is now owned locally. The club house hosts many tournaments and private events and offers junior and group instruction with programs designed to help golfers enhance their skills. This course is nestled in a unmatched setting which offers a challenge for every skill level.
