Blue Lagoon in Svartsengi, Iceland

Blue Lagoon is a 4.5-star, luxury hotel and spa in Svartsengi, Iceland. Situated on the site of a large, natural, geothermal spring, Blue Lagoon is a spiritual place that has drawn visitors for thousands of years. The theme for Blue Lagoon is simply wellness and relaxation, and is a great place to take in the unique natural beauty of Iceland when outside the capital of Reykjavic.

Blue Lagoon Iceland is situated on a geothermal lagoon that allows guests to be at one with nature, soak up the scenic beauty and enjoy breathing the clean, fresh air while relaxing in the warm geothermal seawater. Conde Nast’s Traveller magazine has voted Blue Lagoon as the best medical spa worldwide. For five consecutive years Blue Lagoon has been awarded the Blue Flag environmental recognition granted to natural beaches and marinas.

The water’s temperature is 37-39°C / 98-102°F. The lagoon holds six million liters of geothermal seawater, which is renewed naturally every 40 hours. Regular sampling shows that common bacteria are almost entirely absent in this ecosystem, making it unique in that no additional cleansers, such as chlorine, are needed.

Blue Lagoon Iceland offers dining and entertaining via its restaurant, cafe and lounge bar. Lava Restaurant & Bar offers a unique dining experience. The chefs at Lava emphasize using fresh Icelandic ingredients and the menu ranges from light dishes to gourmet meals. The restaurant is built into a cliff so it features a natural lava wall, adding to its uniqueness. A glass staircase leads guests to Lava Bar on the second floor where guests can enjoy a pre-dinner drink and relax in a comfortable atmosphere. The roof of the restaurant is a viewing platform with a beautiful view of the lagoon and the surrounding area.

Blue Café offers a spectacular view over the lagoon with floor-to-ceiling windows, creating an inviting setting while enjoying a selection of quick, healthy choices such as soups, salads, baguettes and dairy products. Blue Café provides wireless internet access free of charge

Lagoon Bar serves guests bathing in the lagoon and offers light refreshments, such as drinks, ice cream, fruits and baguettes, which can be conveniently credited to the entrance bracelet and paid upon departure. On the second floor a relaxing area awaits guests with comfortable seats and beautiful view of the Blue Lagoon.

The Blue Lagoon Spa offers a range of wellness treatments that make use of Mother Nature’s gifts to the area. The Blue Lagoon’s ecosystem is unique in the world, in fact one of Mother Nature’s laboratories, connecting us with the forces of nature. Through nature and science Blue Lagoon spa treatments and massages provide you with the energy of the geothermal seawater and its active ingredients: minerals, silica and algae.

The treatments take place both inside and in the lagoon itself, in the open air. Blue Lagoon skin care products are used in all treatments. In-water spa treatments take place on a specially designed wooden bench. Massages are performed on a mattress in the lagoon. The outdoor spa area is spacious and more than one treatment can take place simultaneously, making it possible for couples to have a treatment at the same time. Special blankets are used to keep guests warm.

Unique and natural, Blue Lagoon Iceland is something visitors to Iceland should ensure they make time for. It can get busy, as the lagoon is a popular destination for tourists to Iceland, but considering it is open year-round and gets only around 300,000 visitors (which, interestingly, is more than the population number of inhabitants in Iceland), which means it’s never over-crowded like a popular tourist destination in a larger country could, and would, be.

Mother Nature at its awe-inspiring best, coupled with the fact that the natural geothermal seawater replenishes itself every 40 hours, means it has to be the cleanest and most invigorating natural spa on the planet. An oasis in this land of volcanoes and barren landscapes almost void of trees or major plantlife, Blue Lagoon Iceland is a special place in a very unique country and definitely a must-stay experience for the Chic Traveler.
