Castles in the Sand Hotel in Essaouira, Morocco

November 15, 2011 by

Built in the 18th century and built in customary Moroccan style, the houses are located right in the center of this gorgeous little town of Essaouira.

The houses serve as a perfect base for discovering the local area, or simply as a means to relax and unwind an exclusive and enchanting setting. Tenderly restored and delicately decorated, the rooms are roomy yet serene, providing a fresh escape from the outside world.

Dar Beida (The white house) is positioned at the back of Essaouira’s equipped medina with the food markets pretty much on the door step and just about a 10 minute walk to Essaouira’s extensive sandy beach.

A natural contemporary living space has been shaped around ancient sandstone columns and thuya wood ceilings and then a mix of diverse colorful lighting and furnishings has been added, mainly from the 1960’s era. The house sleeps eight and particular concentration has been made to make guests’ stay as content as achievable. Each client is given a pair of babbouche (Moroccan slippers) to use in the house and to take home with them. Local Argan soap, towels and bathrobes are also provided.

The house is built around a central courtyard and is made up of 4 stories. On the ground level there is a library connecting to a chill out room with fire place. Out in the courtyard is a fountain and rest area. On the 1st floor there is an open plan fully equipped kitchen/diner at one end, a living space with stereo in the middle and two fire places and a molded bedroom and shower room towards the back.

The 2nd floor has two double bedrooms with pod fire places in each. In between the bedrooms is a curved bathroom with skylight. Guests walk straight out onto a large terrace which has a very bucolic sun shade area with seating, next to this are a couple of sun beds and a hammock. Guests go up again to a double bedroom with glass fronted doors folding out onto a private terrace with a sink molded into the wall.
