Donovan House, DC

June 1, 2012 by

We love the Kimpton hotel chain. A San Francisco-based company with around 50 boutique hotels across the United States, Kimpton can always be counted on for high style at reasonable prices.

So we were interested to hear that in April 2012, Kimpton opened Donovan House, its 11th boutique hotel in the Washington, DC area.

Formerly an outpost of the NYC-based luxury chain Thompson Hotels, Donovan House has been re-styled and re-branded with signature Kimpton touches like free wifi, morning coffee and nightly wine social, environmentally friendly EarthCare program, open-door pet policy, and some of the friendliest staff around.

The decor is a sort of space-age modern, with hanging lucite chairs in the lobby, futuristic lighting, and nautilus-shaped cocoon showers in the rooms.

Our favorite touch: the rooftop pool and lounge area with pool bar and views of downtown DC. Rooftop pools may be just the practical choice in a land-starved area like downtown DC, but the effect is far more chic than practical. Take a standard pool and put it on the roof, and the simple act of lounging poolside makes you feel like one of the glitterati.

The hotel will keep its pre-Kimpton full-service restaurant, a modern Asian-inspired spot called Zentan.

Donovan House is located on Thomas Circle, at 1155 14th Street NW.
