Hotel Union Square in San Francisco, CA

March 4, 2011 by

Hotel Union Square has completed an extensive modern makeover & emerged as the freshest & most innovative boutique hotel in San Francisco, California.

The 131-room, boutique style Hotel Union Square was originally the Golden West Hotel, built in 1913 for the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition. In the 1950s, the hotel was renamed the Golden State Hotel. Personality Hotels purchased the building in 1980 and opened it two years later as the Hotel Union Square.

Remaining faithful to their Art Deco history, guestrooms have been transformed into a new experience fusing contemporary and classic San Francisco – beautiful brick walls, mosaic murals, signature staircases, & opulent moldings are complemented by a warm color palate, sleek custom furnishings by SF based EQ3, and state-of-the-art technology that caters to both leisure & business travelers. Highlights include platform beds with custom-made cream tufted headboards & 600 thread count luxurious bedding, sleek dark wood desks, velvety chaise lounges, flat screens, custom lighting, drop panel ceilings, & expansive mirrors.

Hotel Union Square offers 131 Guestrooms Including: 29 Spacious Executive Rooms, 10 Sleep & Soak Rooms, 3 Junior Queen Suites, 2 Penthouse Suites with Private Sun Decks, 1 Kids Suite – “Ring in the Kids Suite” and The Dashiell Hammett Suite.

The striking guestrooms at Hotel Union Square are infused with the colors of San Francisco, featuring bursts of crimson, soothing shades of grey and earthy taupe. Designed to give the feel of a sophisticated urban apartment, rooms are custom furnished by EQ3 with platform beds and tufted leather headboards, sleek dark wood desks, velvety chaise lounges, and expansive capsule-shaped mirrors.

The Ring in the Kids Suite at Hotel Union Square celebrates the history of this art deco-styled property, which opened in 1913 for the 1915 San Francisco Pan Pacific Exhibition. Stylized in primary colors, the kids’ suite boasts retro-style mixed media collages of famous kid-friendly San Francisco landmarks. The suite features a cherry wood trundle bed, a computer filled with history-related games, Nintendo Wii, a writing desk, a large colorful rug, and an oversized grease board that allows kids to create a little history of their own. For those parents that wish to stay in the same room with their kids but still need their own space, this large corner suite is perfect and comes complete with one King bed in addition to the kids trundle bed.

Kids have their own check-in at Hotel Union Square, and receive Ghirardelli chocolates, a list of kid-friendly San Francisco attractions handpicked by the hotel owner’s children, and two cable car passes (limit two per family). The Ring in the Kids Suite sleeps up to two adults and two children.

Attention literary buffs! Hotel Union Square, San Francisco’s original boutique hotel, is home to the world’s only Dashiell Hammett Suite, dedicated to the celebrated author best known for his novel “The Maltese Falcon” (1930). The famous scribe loved the hotel so much that he booked his bride-to-be Josephine Dolan in a suite on the night before their 1921 wedding. San Francisco-based artist and interior designer Lisa Compagno meticulously created the “Dashiell Hammett Suite,” treating guests to a history lesson in the life of the famed scribe. From the two stainless steel eyes hanging in the entrance (a reference to Hammett’s short story “The Girl with the Silver Eyes”) to the hand towels adorned with Hammett’s image in the bathroom, no detail has been overlooked in this large corner suite. Special touches include: an antique suitcase filled with Hammett books; an old fashioned typewriter; a collage dedicated to Hammett books and movies; black and white photos of Hammett’s wife and daughters; a vintage-style radio; and a mural of the shadow of “The Thin Man.”
