The Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita is a former cave church now transformed into a romantic eatery lit by dozens of candles creating an enchanting experience complete with classic music and an open fire.

Here guests can experience the local cuisine along with local wines, herbal teas, and more. Patrons can enjoy the mystical atmosphere of the cave church inside or can take advantage of outdoor seating on the patio overlooking the Murgia Matera.

Things to Do in Matera

Those who find staying at the Le Grotte Della Civita an adventure in history may also want to book “The History of Mankind” tour to Sassi of Matera. It offers a timeless journey that traces the human presence in this area from the Paleolithic period to present day.

The area also offers hiking opportunities in the Natural Archaeological Park of the Rock Churches which features fascinating landscapes and unique photo opps. The complete trail offers the opportunity to visit the rock churches of San Falcione, the ancient sheepfold rupeste, and more as you walk the paths that detail the birth of Matera.

For the experienced hiker, a 7 hour hike is offered that takes guests to the creek Della Rossa where they can climb along the ridge of La Costa Rossa. From here the panoramic view of all the peaks of the park is truly breathtaking. This longer trek is offered from March to November.
