Soho House Hotel in Berlin, Germany

August 20, 2010 by

Soho House is a 40-room, 5-star, luxury boutique hotel in Berlin, Germany. This late-Bauhaus structure is a listed building with a distinct symmetrical façade and notable history.
The historic building originally opened in 1928 as a department store and then the property was seized by the wartime government before being occupied by the post-war Communist regime up until 1956. It was then used to house the Communist Party archives and the Central Committee’s Historical Institution. After German reunification the building was legally returned to the descendents of its original owners, but has remained derelict until now.

The hotel’s forty bedrooms are situated over 4 floors and come in five different categories. At 118 sqm the largest rooms include free-standing baths, dining tables and seating areas. The smaller 24 sqm attic rooms have a dormitory feel with wooden beds and steel cabinets. Most of the bedrooms have a traditional vintage record player and selection of custom vinyl LP’s.

The Club Floor is built around a central bar, the Club Bar with the House Kitchen Restaurant located to one side and the sitting room to the other. A black and white tiled floor runs throughout the House Kitchen, with parquet tiling over the rest of the floor. The restaurant seats 50 and is furnished with chunky metal tables and red kitchen chairs, while the sitting room features a mixture of oversized sofas, banquette seating and comfortable chairs. Two fireplaces sit either side of the bar, which is decorated throughout with chandelier lighting.

Above the Club Floor the Rooftop lounge and restaurant features a heated pool, tiled with green Pyrolave volcanic stone and surrounded by timber decking, striped sun loungers and umbrellas. Overlooking the pool, the indoor bar and kitchen feature mirrored walls and marbled white tables, and open onto a terrace on either side.

The Cowshed Relax Spa offers facials, massages, and body treatments, with five private treatment rooms, and comfy mani-pedi stations. The spa also has a sauna and steam room, changing facilities, and a large Hamam with internal pods. Individual areas of Cowshed Relax are curtained off into private alcoves, ideal for pre and post-treatment relaxation. There is also a retail area where you can stock up on Cowshed spa products.
Refreshments are also served during opening hours.

Cowshed Active is a large, fully equipped gym with individual changing rooms and lockers. Large windows allow for views of the surrounding area whilst working out. A series of classes are available, please check with the Cowshed Active reception for more information.
The second floor of the hotel hosts the venue’s event spaces. The first is the Politburo – with the middle area leading out to a balcony overlooking Torstrabe. The room is decorated with its original wooden panelling, and comprises a circular bar and dining area. The Politburo is available for private hire and will also host regular members’ events, accommodating dinner parties of up to 60 people and drinks parties of up to 100 people. The Politburo is reserved for members’ events and private hire, with a range of Audio Visual equipment available.

On the Lowest floor is also a Movie Theater and Private Screening Room. The 30-seater cinema is fully equipped and screens films in digital, HD, 3D and 35mm formats. The Cinema will host regular members’ screenings and events.

The Library features original shelving from the London Library, filled with an assortment of art and design books that can be purchased or borrowed whilst in the House.

The Library also features a bar and can be hired for private events in conjunction with the cinema for pre-screening drinks or separately for other private events.
