Schoolhouse Hotel

Dublin is a historic city and the School House Ballsbridge Hotel is part of that history. It was originally St. Stephens Parochial School when it opened its doors in 1861. It reached peak attendance of 307 children in 1892, and by 1910 the principal of the school and many of the teachers enjoyed accommodations in the little rooms above the classrooms.

Another feature of the schoolhouse was the kitchen which served as a “domestic science” room for female students. By 1969 the school was forced to close and was left idle until 1997 when the Sweeney Hotel group decided to restore the building to its former glory. A year later it opened its doors as the School House Ballsbridge Hotel with many of the original features intact.

Some of the former classrooms now host the award-winning Schoohouse Bar and Restaurant and bar, one of the trendiest eateries in Dublin.

For brunch, they try to focus on traditional dishes like scrambled eggs, eggs Benedict, and poached haddock with spinach. The Chef says the goal is to match the food to what the Schoolhouse is, “an old traditional building, very well renewed, with a lot of charm. It makes a perfect oasis from the daily Dublin hustle and bustle.
