Stay Here: ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden

September 26, 2012 by

The world’s first, and largest, hotel made of ice and snow dazzles visitors each winter who are looking for a luxurious alternative to a standard hotel. Built from water and ice of the nearby Torne River, the ICEHOTEL is reconstructed each winter in preparation for the season’s guests.

At the end of the season, the ice blocks are returned to the river where they once again become fresh, flowing water. This means that each year, the design of ICEHOTEL is unique and pushes the boundaries of what can be done with ice.

While you might think that staying in a room made of ice couldn’t possibly be a relaxing and luxe experience, the experts on the ICEHOTEL Art & Design team have made sure each guest will feel comfortable.

Visitors are welcome year-round, though what you’ll see when you visit depends on the time of year you stay at this iconic hotel. During the beginning of winter, guests will witness the building of the hotel, during the depths of winter, visitors will be able to see the completed hotel, and in spring, guests can learn about the ice harvesting and building process, visit the ICEBAR and try sculpting ice themselves.

Accommodations at ICEHOTEL are minimalistic, yet somehow cozy. It’s recommended that guests spend one night in the “cold accommodations” and a few nights in the “warm accommodations” for maximum comfort. ICEHOTEL provides warm outer layers, gloves, shoes, and a morning sauna to thaw out when staying in the cold accommodations, which consist of snow rooms and ice rooms with furniture made completely out of snow and ice. Warm hotel rooms and chalets balance out the experience.

A stay at the ICEHOTEL can be booked through the hotel’s website. Rooms at the ICEHOTEL during the winter season start at $173 USD.

I’d like to try this out. But I think one night in “cold” accommodations would be enough. Looks beautiful.
