Sydney’s newest, and one of the most talked about, boutique hotels has officially opened its doors in September 2012. The QT Sydney, a luxury hotel with 200 guest suites, displays an interesting mix of modern with definite nods to the past. And rightfully so, as the QT Sydney is actually comprised of two historic buildings, the State Theatre and Gowings Building.
QT Sydney spans both of these historic buildings along Market Street in the heart of Sydney. Originally opened to the public in 1929, the Gowings department store and the State Theatre were both built in iconic styles of the time.
A careful restoration of the landmark buildings has put new life into the Gothic features of the Gowings building and the Art Déco, Gothic, and Venetian influences incorporated into the State Theatre. Many of the features have been restored to their original charm, complete with gargoyles.
Inside, the QT Sydney is all about modern luxury, however. The design could easily be described as quirky and contemporary, which somehow works nicely with the historic architecture. The historical allure is definitely still there, but QT Sydney aims to make the hotel a hip and happening place to stay, dine and drink.
Rooms at the QT Sydney start at $460 AUD and can be booked through the hotel’s website.
