The Canal House Boutique Hotel Amsterdam

September 14, 2011 by

The cultural heart of Amsterdam is Jordaan, and it is home to the 23 room boutique hotel Canal House.

The hotel encompasses three 17th Century merchants’ houses but is found in 21st Century Amsterdam. There is a large garden, Garden House and Summer House for private dining, and Bar and Great Room. The design of the hotel is enchanting, modern, and cozy but evokes the history of the three buildings and the outlying area.

Each bedroom in Canal House is created with the plan to center the hotel in 21st Century Amsterdam while still holding true to the influences of Dutch art and history. They have used the light and dark palette of conventional Dutch paintings, the silks and velvets of earlier Dutch traders, and in many rooms, the contemporary version of the traditional porcelain washbowl and washstand. The ornate ceilings and fireplaces, the surviving original features, have been restored. Also, many of the pictures from the previous life of Canal House can be found along the hallways of the hotel.

Canal House is home to: Good Rooms, Better Rooms, Great Rooms, Exceptional rooms, and Best Room. Each includes: LCD screens, Blu-ray players, Bose iPod docking stations and Wi-Fi, and Green & Spring bespoke bath and body products.

Good Rooms have a king size bed and views onto the garden or an internal lightwell, either a walk-in shower or a bathtub with shower overhead; Better Rooms have a king size bed and look onto an internal lightwell ensuring total privacy with open plan bathtubs with shower overhead; Great Rooms are Canal House’s larged rooms with a king size bed and expanding views onto the canal or garden with double sinks and bathtubs with showers; Exceptional Rooms have a kind size bed and offer beautiful views over the canal or garden with large bathrooms and double sinks, bathtubs, and some, separate showers; Best room inhabits the top floor and offers sweeping views over the Keizergracht canal. There is a lounge with sofas, casual seating, a bathtub big enough for two, and a seamless glass shower neighboring the sleeping area.

The menus at Canal House are European-influences with a particular importance on local, seasonal produce. An all-day menu is available in both the Bar and the Great Room.

Canal House is a hotel holding on to it’s past but also embracing it’s present.
