The Kimber Modern in Austin, Texas

May 5, 2011 by

The Kimber Modern is a unique and new way to stay, located in Austin, Texas.

The independent urban traveler is sure to find the Kimber Modern a great escape. The appeal stretches from the clean lines of architectural work to the abundant light filtered throughout the canopy of oaks in the courtyard to the comfort and attention to detail found throughout this sophisticated space.

The exterior is vigorously clad in an energy efficient rain-screen of a slate-like concrete board running equivalent to the sloped street. Windows and balconies obtrude through the front giving hints of the beauty within. There is a duality found throughout the hotel that is paralleled in the individual design languages employed external versus internal. While the outside is marvelously fascinating and extraordinary, the inside is a mix of high design and inviting sincerity. The features were selected with care found more within a home than a hotel.

Throughout the hotel, guests will find: Ball ceiling fans from Modern Fan Company, Offi Perch Lounge reading chairs, Eames molded plastic desk chairs, Euroluce Italian lighting throughout, Philippe Starck and Duravit bathroom sinks, frosted glass bathroom walls and showers, Pratt and Larson Yuta Silk 12 x 24 inch porceline floor tiles, ¾“ ice blue glass bathroom tiles, custom fabricated maple queen beds, sound resistant solid core maple doors, velvet blackout curtain, Arne Jacobsen Egg chairs and floor to ceiling glass. The artwork found throughout the hotel are of three local artists: Martha Gannon, Margo Sawyer and Valerie Fowler.

The hub of the hotel is the Common Area. The space is filled with magnificently designed furniture where guests can sink into one of four Arne Jacobson egg chairs. The Courtyard is more like a modern treehouse for adults. It is tucked under a canopy of old Texas Live Oaks and covered in a multi-level deck of cozy seating.

The 5 rooms of the hotel are minimalistic and modern, yet warm and inviting. Stylish touches include: 500 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets, all natural latex rubber queen beds and distinctive glass bathroom.

The White Suite, in a class of its own, is pure perfection. It features a custom Maple king bed which can be separated into two twins, a spectacular glass bathroom with Kaldewei tub, a complimentary stocked mini bar and a 400 square foot private deck.

The Red Suite has the same minimal beauty of the hotel’s rooms with a bit more space. This beautiful suite comes complete with comfortable seating area with table and chairs and a custom made couch designed by architect Burton Baldridge.

The Kimber Modern is located in South Austin, amidst, yet hidden away, from many significant restaurants, live music and excellent shopping. Guests are sure to find anything they may be searching for.

This space is intricate in its simplicity and magnificent in its design. Thee Kimber Modern is an architectural work of art.
