The Underwater Music Festival brings together those who love music, care about the environment and enjoy diving and snorkeling. This festival celebrates its 31st year and is scheduled for July 11, 2015.
For those who can’t make it to the concert in person, it can be heard around the world via radio. For those who can make it, plan to slip into those fins and snorkeling gear to go “Diving with the Stars from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at Looe Key Reef in the Florida Keys.
Emphasizes Reef Preservation
This event draws hundreds of boats which congregate at Looe Key and part of the continental United States’ only living coral barrier reef.
The Underwater Music Festival emphasizes reef preservation, with the radio broadcast presenting tips for divers and snorkelers to minimize impacts on the Keys’ marine environment.
Last year more than 500 divers enjoyed this eccentric concert designed for divers and snorkelers and this year they expect even more.
Music and Theme
Music is actually piped in underwater via speakers which are suspended from boats above the third largest reef in the world, and while the music is classic rock, this year has no one theme so festival goers are invited to do their own thing when it comes to costumes.
Free Dive Clinic
Along with the concert on July 11th, the festival is also offering a free dive clinic the day before. Festivities actually start at 6:00 p.m. on July 10 with a reception at the Lower Keys Chamber grounds. Guests attending will have an opportunity to enjoy upscale hors d’oeuvres, adult beverages, and more.
The Looe Reef is situated about 6 miles south of Big Pine Key, FL. For those who reserve a spot by July 8 the cost is just $10 or you can pay $15 at the door.
Contact any of the local dive shops in the area to reserve a seat on one of their boats for the costume party.
This festival is sponsored by US 1 Radio, which broadcasts underwater using speakers provided by Lubell Labs. For more information, call 305-872-2411.
