June 24, 2012 by

Each year,┬áTeluk Bahang Dam becomes frenzied with competitors and fans of the┬áPenang International Dragon Boat Racing Festival. This year, the festival takes place on June 30 – July 1, 2012.

The tradition of the dragon boat race dates back to 1934 in China, however the current festivities and level of excitement surrounding the competition is a fairly new thing.

Taking place over three days, the festival brings together teams from all over the world to compete in this prestigious and time-honored tradition. This year, teams from the United States, Australia, England, Thailand, South Africa, the UAE, New Zealand, the Philippines and of course Malaysia are all entered into the race.

The boats they race in are made of traditional teak wood and are powered solely by human strength in the same way fisherman and boaters have maneuvered for over a thousand years. Modern day boats are adorned with dragon heads and tails to add a little extra character and charm.

Steeped in tradition and culture, the Dragon Boat Festival is not to be missed if you are anywhere near Malaysia during the weekend of the race.
