Elderly Couple Win Vacation That’s Too Good to Be True

Perth Headlines

A retired Australian couple won a free vacation to Canada, complete with free luggage. While the trip was free, the unnamed couple unwittingly became drug mules.

The couple, a 72-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman returned from a vacation in the Great White North on Oct. 13 and sought out the custom officials in Perth, Australia. They had concerns about their luggage. When the Australian Federal Police took a closer look they found 3.5 kilograms of methamphetamine hidden in the lining of each bag.

Won a Free Vacation on the Internet

The 64-year-old woman, who wants to be called Sue, explained that they were researching possible holiday getaways online and entered an online competition for a free vacation. They were contacted by the agency and told they were the winners.

Now Sue says to “be very careful if you win anything. I could have ended up in jail for 25 years, and they could have ruined my life. So be very wary, be very careful and check everything out.”

3.5 kilograms of meth was hidden in each bag.

Older People Targeted

Australian Federal Police Commander, David Bachi, said “The organizers of this scam went to great lengths to provide a fa├žade of legitimacy. Thankfully the travelers contacted Customs and didn’t dismiss their concerns, allowing us to make the arrest.”

Police suspect the scam deliberately targeted older people, and that the couple’s bags were switched out for the drug laden luggage while they were in Canada.

The investigation has led to the arrest of a 38-year-old Canadian at the Perth Airport. He has been charged with importing a commercial quantity of a controlled drug. The couple won’t be charged but from now on they will be a bit more weary of accepting “free” prizes.

Other than inadvertently becoming drug smugglers, they did enjoy their trip.

It’s amazing to me the lengths criminals will go to! Glad this story had a happy ending for the elderly couple! Crazy.
