Civil War Saterway Resources

The Manassas National Battlefield Park is partnering with the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority to put together this kayaking trip. The tour will focus on Civil War waterway resources. Life was much different back then, and participants will learn the influential role these waterway resources played in the two battle campaigns fought at Manassas. While sitting in your kayak listening to the sounds of nature history comes alive. Those participating in the tour will learn more about the following historic sites:

  • Stone Bridge
  • Lewis Ford
  • Balls Ford
  • Island Ford
  • Mitchell’s Ford
  • Blackburn’s Ford
  • The site where Centreville Military Railroad crossed Bull Run

Six Hours and Seven Miles

Kayakers will meet at the Stone Bridge at 9:00 a.m. on May 11, and the tour will finish up at Blackburn’s Ford around 3:00 p.m. Kayaks, paddles, life vests, and other necessary equipment is provided, but participants are responsible for bringing water, snacks, sun screen, insect repellent and other such personal items. Those participating should be in good shape as the total paddling distance is around 7 miles.

Civil War Mounment Reservations Needed

For those who want to join the tour, reservations are required. Call 703-690-2121 to make reservations. Space is limited so it is best to contact them sooner rather than later. Cost is $30 per person and kayakers must be at least 16 years old. If water levels are low and insufficient for kayaking, the event will be cancelled and a full refund offered.
