5 Food-Inspired Trips to Take This Fall

September 3, 2012 by

If you consistently find yourself seeking out the best food in any location you visit, why not take a trip that actually revolves around food? Food-inspired trips allow you to see a new place, while also sampling the best fare in town.

Some locations are known just as much for their cuisine as they are for their cultural offerings or attractions. Follow your stomach to one of these 5 places for a great food-inspired vacation this fall.

1. Tuscany

Italian food lovers should definitely make the trek to Italy at least once in their life to sample homemade Italian food made like nowhere else on the planet. A trip to Tuscany will surely add a few inches to your waistline, but many would argue that it’s well worth it.

Sample artisan olive oils, Bistecca alla Fiorentina, Tuscan bread, Finocchiona salami, Pappa al Pomodoro and meats like Porcini, rabbit and wild boar. Tuscan food is rustic, while still encompassing many of the traditional Italian ways to prepare and serve food.

2. Maine

No matter where you go in Maine, you’re sure to eat well. Hit the coast for some of the freshest seafood in the country, all while taking in breathtaking views of the coastline and sea. Sip basil lemonade while eating lobster prepared in ways you’ve never dreamed of. Microbrews, seafood and friendly conversation are what you’ll find at the majority of Maine’s eateries.

3. Shanghai

While there may be much better locales to dine in China, Shanghai offers up some great options that are easy to find and close enough to each other that you can spend an entire day eating yourself around the city.

Visitors must sample the xiaolongbao soup dumplings, Di Shui Dong ribs that fall right off the bone, grilled oysters, frog meat, fried pork dumplings and noodles served up late night right on the streets.

4. Philadelphia

The City of Brotherly Love has a lot to offer in terms of historical and cultural attractions, but no trip to Philadelphia is complete without sampling a few cheesesteaks. The famous steaks, served up fresh with cheese whiz, can be found at many establishments around the city.

The most famous, however, are found at Pat’s and Geno’s – rival cheesesteak purveyors situated right across the street from one another. Sample both and choose which side of the rivalry you fall on.

5. Mexico

Traveling around Mexico, vacationers will find a number of drool-worthy foods and snacks. Corn tortillas, fresh meats and sauces are what draw many vacationers south of the border. Try traditional Mexican foods like quesadillas, burritos, empanadas, tacos, tamales, stews and soups for a real taste of Mexico that you just can’t get at your local Taco Bell.
