Adventure Weekend: Soča Valley, Slovenia

August 1, 2013 by

If you’re the adventurous type looking for an overseas destination, look no further than Slovenia. Hidden in the mountains of this recent European Union member lies the Soča Valley, a dream land for adventure sport enthusiasts and tranquility seeking travelers alike.

The Soča River (pronounced So-shuh) is a stunning aqua green and creates a bold contrast against the gray limestone and lush forests that coat the Julian Alps. It’s simply breathtaking.

Here you can enjoy the view from the waters edge while sunbathing, in the water rafting or kayaking Class III-IV whitewater, from the hills on world class mountain bike trails, or from the sky paragliding. No matter what adventure you choose, you’re sure to come across old remains from WWI and WWII, as well as the recent battles with Yugoslavia.

Accommodations here include luxury hotels, hostels, or cozy campgrounds. No matter what your budget allows or requirements include, there’s a place here for you.

The food here is equally jaw dropping. With the influence of Italy, pizza and gelato are everywhere, and it’s some of the best you’ve ever tasted. For a more authentic meal, try the local delicacy, lamb stew.

It’s a playground for adults that will have you throwing a tantrum for more.
