“Oh beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain, For purple mountain, majesty above the fruited plain!”

On top of Pikes Peak, you’ll understand how this poem by Katharine Lee Bates came to be. From the summit of “America’s mountain”, you’ll have 360 degree views into the amber grains of Kansas and to the purple Colorado mountains. And it sure is beautiful.

There’s a few ways to get to the top!

You can drive the Pikes Peak Highway, a 19 mile, paved, hair pinned winding road to the summit with breathtaking views ($12 day pass).

You could also opt for the Pikes peak Cog Railway, the world’s highest cog railway. This train gives you a view of the lesser traveled southern side of Pikes Peak ($29 roundtrip in the summer).

Finally, you can hoof your way to the top (free). Barr Trail is a 12.6 mile trail that will challenge even the most fit. It also provides you with the most intimate and rewarding views of this majestic mountain.

No matter which way you choose to get to the summit, stop in the Summit House and grab a famous Pikes Peak Donut (free with this coupon). In fact, buy two, because they’re just that good. And where else can you eat a donut at 14,115ft?
