Camden Ties to Windjammers

During the nineteenth century, Camden’s harbor was filled with schooners, sloops, and scows all year long. At the time, these sailing vessels were a key means of transportation.

This began to change when the steamship was introduced. Suddenly these magnificent sailing ships lost their importance in the seafaring world, but one Camden resident, Frank Swift, thought otherwise. He began a small business called Maine Windjammer Cruises and featured sailing expeditions to people who wanted to experience the thrill and adventure of sailing aboard one of these ships.

Swift sold his business, but 80 years later his legacy lives on and Camden is still a hub of windjammers.

So a windjammer is just a nickname for sailboats? Or something more specific? I didn’t realize that. I thought a sailboat was a sailboat … or a yacht!
