Croatia: An Up and Coming Eastern Europe Destination

October 19, 2013 by

Croatia makes an ideal destination for travelers who enjoy the adventure of the outdoors. This charming country is home to enchanting medieval cities, rugged mountains, and the azure waters of the Adriatic Sea with 2000 km of coastline and more than 1,000 islands.

Along with the stunning landscape, the people of Croatia are friendly, and most hotels not only offer a high level of customer service but are affordable, too.

Best Time to Visit Croatia

July and August is high season for visiting Croatia and the most reasonable time to fly, but it is also the most crowded time to visit. At other times of year, travel options are limited and more expensive. If you prefer a less crowded destination, the out-of-season travel inconvenience is worth the little bit of extra hassle.

Getting Around Croatia

Once you arrive, you can explore Croatia via car, bus, or organized tour. Ferries do run year round from Venice, and buses and organized tours are available to help introduce you to this this fascinating destination.

However, having your own car has its advantages. It makes getting around much more convenient. For instance, you can drive along the Adriatic Highway which offers views of towns constructed on slopes, bays, and craggy cliffs, and you can stop when and where you like.

Enjoy the Great Outdoors in Croatia

Croatia’s coastal landscape and beaches, mountains, valleys, and national parks like the Plitvice National Park, with its 16 beautiful lakes, caves, forests, and more than 90 waterfalls, offer plenty to see and do. For first-time visitors, probably the safest way to explore Croatia is through an organized tour.

Hikers, cyclists, and those who enjoy paddling through the narrow canyons of two of the most beautiful rivers in Europe: the Zrmanja and Krumpa, or those who’d like to try their hand at kayaking on car-free Vrgada Island, can find tours to make it happen.

Croatia has been included as a “must do” destination by National Geographic and Lonely Planet. It is an up-and coming destination that offers history, pristine natural settings and adventure along with an interesting culture, delicious Croatian fare, and intimate lodgings.

I only recently considered Croatia as a travel destination when I saw scenes in the HBO show Game of Thrones had been partially shot there, and it looked beautiful. It’s on my list now.
