Cruise the Mekong River

July 31, 2012 by

A cruise down the Mekong River, a source of vitality for much of Southeast Asia, is a memorable and breathtaking excursion. The Mekong winds through Tibet, China, Burma, Laos, and Cambodia before ending in Vietnam.

Any port city along the way can make an ideal starting point for a cruise on the Mekong. Some suggestions for port cities to explore and leave from include My Tho (a short drive from Ho Chi Minh City), Pakse, Luang Prabang, Saigon and more.

Depending on the part of the Mekong River you explore via boat or steamer, you will see anything from colorful markets to bee farms, caves to coconut candy factories. Most river cruises will stop at many interesting destinations along the way for tours, dining opportunities, and tour-guided exploration.

A cruise on the Mekong is one of the best ways to discover local culture and lifestyle that is truly off the beaten path. You’ll get to see much more traveling by boat than you would by foot, bike, or car.

Tailor your cruise on the Mekong River to your starting destination and what you would like to see. Many tour operators offer cruises from each point, and each itinerary will be slightly different.
