Don’t Miss: Downtown Monterey, CA

May 15, 2012 by

Steinbeck’s beloved Cannery Row is still a hot spot in Monterey, lined with shops and eateries that attract tourists to this seaside town. Once the center of the whaling and sardine industry of coastal California, Cannery Row still pays homage to the past but also lives in the present.

Today, visitors to downtown Monterey will find wine tasting rooms, live music, boutique shops, eateries, spas and much more. And, with the beach just a few steps off of the main street, relaxing after a long day of shopping and snacking has never been easier.

Downtown Monterey is also home to the Monterey Aquarium, a world-class aquarium with breathtaking exhibits. To see wildlife outside of the walls of the aquarium, head to Fisherman’s Wharf to see the sea lions, or board a tour boat for some whale watching.

The coastal town of Monterey also offers up some great outdoor activities, with the easily accessible Monterey Bay Coastal Trail and opportunities to kayak, scuba dive, golf, bike and fish at various locations around town. Also, be sure to take a glimpse into Monterey’s history in Old Monterey at the Monterey State Historic Park.
