The limestone island of Capri is a must-see destination for anyone heading to Italy. Arrive by boat from Naples or Sorrento on the Amalfi Coast year-round for picturesque views, beautiful beaches, cobblestone streets and perfect weather. Capri can be a day trip from the Amalfi Coast or southern Italy, or a vacation destination on its own.
Capri has always been a getaway locale for the rich and famous. In the past, stars like Sophia Loren and Jacqueline Kennedy could be seen lounging on the beach. Today, it’s a top vacation spot for celebrities like Julia Roberts and Harrison Ford.
But aside from the stars, there are many other reasons to visit Capri. Impressive architecture, a beautiful plaza, shops and restaurants galore fill the tiny island. During the season, from May to September, you can expect throngs of crowds. To avoid the masses, visit in the late fall or early spring.
One of the best ways to explore the island is by open-top cab, bus or by boat. Guided tours around the island showcase historic ruins, views of Mt. Vesuvius, colorful villas, the Blue Grotto, Villa San Michele and Mt. Solaro.
Any one who has been to Capri might warn you not to go, simply because once you are there, you’ll never want to leave.
