Colmar, France

Colmar, France offers a charming destination with canals and picturesque homes that look like they’re out of a medieval storybook town.

While it looks like the setting for Beauty and the Beast, it features plenty to do and see for visitors with four museums, two theaters, and a number of music festivals, a book fair and dozens of other events including Christmas markets at the historic center of town from late November to the end of December.

Two Markets of Easter

For those who like the idea of Christmas Markets, Colmar, France, also offers the two markets of Easter in the spring. These markets are on the historic Place of the Former Customs and the Place of the Dominicans, both representative of Colmar of the Middle Ages.

The route between the two markets carries you through the typically Alsatian alleys of the city and offers the perfect opportunity to drink in the magnificent architectural heritage. The 2014 markets of Easter will be open from April 4 to April 21.

Colmar Museums

Among the museums, the Musée Unterlinden is one of France’s most popular. It features something for every interest with exhibit themes including archaeology, modern art, decorative arts, fine arts, and history.

Exhibits include a rich collection of sculptures and painting from the late Middle Ages to the early Renaissance period with one of the most popular exhibits being the Issenheim altarpiece painted by Grunewald (1512-1516).

The Museum d’Histoire Naturelle et d’Ethnographie or Natural History and Ethnography in English is another popular stop for visitors. It is housed in a beautiful 16th-century mansion, formerly a Turenne school.

Here you’ll learn about the geophysical evolution of the region, the local endangered species, and an interesting collection of invertebrates, plus exhibits devoted to Ancient Egypt and sub-Saharan Africa. This unique museum is closed May 1 to November 1, but guided tours are available by appointment.

The Animated Museum of Toys and model Trains is a must-visit for kids of all ages. It includes toy automata, dolls, cars, boats, planes, steam engines and more displayed on three open floors.

A computer-controlled puppet show “The Fox and the Stork” is re-created in an Alsatian décor and train-lovers will enjoy the one-kilometer (0.6 mile) train network and the locomotive Britannia.
