If you’re lucky enough to find yourself in northern Africa relaxing in the picturesque town of Chefchaouen, take a few moments, or a few days, to truly soak in the tranquility and peace found in this quaint mountain city.

With everything that travelers would hope to find in Morocco – small town feel, friendly locals, pray bells ringing throughout town, mountain backdrop – Chefchaouen is the perfect vacation destination for a whole lot of R&R.

Set against the Rif Mountains, Chefchaouen is a welcome break to main tourist cities in Morocco like Marrakech and Fez .Walking around the medina, visitors can marvel at the traditional architecture, whitewashed walls, cobblestone streets and general quietness of the entire place.

Aside from viewing ancient mosque ruins, the Ras el Maa waterfall and the other wonderful offerings of the medina, Chefchaouen is also a great place for those who want to explore the Rif Mountains on foot.

Hiking spots like the Pond de Dieu, Talasemtane national park and the Jebel al-Kalaa provide sweeping views of the city and the surrounding area.

After a long day of exploring, travelers will find a number of family-owned hotels and guesthouses throughout town. Avoid cheap hotels and opt to stay in a family-run establishment, like the Dar Gabriel or Casa Peleta. These hotels will give you a true taste of Moroccan lifestyle.

If traveling out and about, hire a sanctioned local guide to avoid any potential problems.
