Fort Churchill

Fort Churchill State Historic Park was once an active U.S. Army fort. It was built in 1861 to offer protection for settlers, but was abandoned 9 years later.

Today what remains stands in ruins, but people can learn more at the visitor center which includes artifacts of the fort’s history. While some ruins remain, other buildings no longer exist, but markers explain about the structures that once stood there. All those years ago,

The Pony Express and Overland Telegraph passed through the area. The Civil War made the fort an important supply depot for the Nevada Military District.

It’s a popular destination for hikers who enjoy camping, picnicking, photography, canoeing and history. The park is located 8 miles south of Silver Springs.

Fort Churchill Wildlife at the Park

Wildlife at the park includes wild turkey, mule deer, bobcat, coyote and fox along with a variety of birds and reptiles.

Summer temperatures are hot with highs of 94F during the day and nighttime lows of 58F. Hikers should plan to dress in layers to ensure they are prepared.

Full Moon Hikes

Full Moon Hikes offer a whole new perspective of the park. Hikes begin on August 1 at 8:30 p.m. in the museum parking lot and run through the month.

Hikers should bring sturdy hiking shoes and other personal items like water, binoculars, flashlight, and insect repellent. Moonlight hikes are free, but a per vehicle charge of $7 is charged to get into the park.
