Polynesian Paradise in Moorea

May 21, 2012 by

Have you always dreamed of a tropical vacation on the beautiful island of Tahiti? It’s time to edit that bucket list. The island of Moorea, just 12 miles from Tahiti and half an hour by ferry, has the same crystal blue waters, dramatic mountain ridges, and lush foliage but with fewer tourists, lower prices, and more of the traditional island charm.

In fact, Moorea is where Tahitians go to get away from it all!

Moorea packs every tropical wonder into its 51 square miles. It is exactly what you picture when you envision French Polynesia: a palette of turquoise and emerald, beaches of silky white sand, lush mountainside rain forests, majestic waterfalls, resorts with thatched-roof overwater bungalows, days spent snorkeling crystalline waters and horseback riding on the beach.

While you’re there, be sure to visit the Belvedere Lookout, a world-famous view of Cook’s Bay and Oponohu Bay and the surrounding mountains. There is no large town on the island, but many areas have clusters of shops and basic services.

Despite the small size, Moorea offers a range of accommodations from very basic backpacker hostels to name-brand resorts like the Sofitel, Intercontinental, and Hilton.
