Join the Celebration: Happy Birthday Hilton Head

October 1, 2013 by

Hilton Head

Fall has officially arrived, and Hilton Head Island is celebrating its 350th birthday. It was discovered in 1663 by Captain William Hilton. The town of Hilton Head was incorporated in 1983 so it’s 30th birthday is also being celebrated.

With these two commemorative anniversaries coinciding, a committee of residents and organizations have formed the 350/30 celebration committee and have scheduled an entire week of events (Sept. 30 – Oct. 5, 2013) to mark the occasion.

Fall is a perfect time of year to enjoy outdoor events at Hilton Head. October is a month offering food festivals, art shows, a prestigious automotive event, entertaining plays, and even trick-or-treating late in the month. This year, with the birthday celebration, there’s even more available for your enjoyment.

September 30: Celebrations will kick off with the Hilton Head Island Pathways Connect Bike Ride (10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.) — a 60 mile ride of the island’s pathways. In the afternoon visit the Town Hall Open House to view fire department exhibits and enjoy food and refreshments. Don’t forget to sign the giant birthday card.

October 1: Island History Day starts with a free bus tour with Island History Day Tours (9:30 a.m., Noon, 2:30 p.m.). Tours last between 75-90 minutes. Reservations are required so call 843-689-6767 to save your place. History buffs can also learn more about island history through Island History Day Keynote speakers Dr. Larry Rowland and Dr. Stephen Wise from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m.

October 2: Got Art? This fundraiser for the Art League of Hilton Head allows guests to buy tickets for $100. Each guest will take home a donated piece of artwork created by one of 150 talented local artists. This event will be held at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

October 4: Almost 5K Run & Tot Trot (4:00 p.m.). Register for this 3-mile Coligny Beach run for free. After the race kids 10 and younger can take part in a 350-yard Tot Trot. Registration is required. Call 843-338-6175.

October 5: Grand Finale Celebration, Coligny Beach, Noon-6 p.m. The week-long birthday celebration will culminate with live bands, a shag demonstration (the South Carolina state dance), along with plenty of local food and drink, photos, a Captain Hilton look-alike contest, a sand castle contest and more.
