If you have a layover, or just one day to spend in this capital city of Bavaria, Germany, use this sample itinerary to get the most of this ancient city.

Starting from the center of Munich, near the Hauptbanhof (central train station), walk east towards the Marienplatz. Here you will see the Old and New Town Halls, the Frauenkirche, and the Viktualienmarkt.

This is considered the “Old Town” and is an area worth a whole day on it’s own. Stop for coffee and croissants at any of the small cafes that line the square, and grab some fresh fruit for snacking from the street vendors.

Continue east until you reach the Isar river and walk north along Steinsdorfstrasse. The river was part of the old salt trade route and now has become a popular retreat for the locals. You’ll see runners, bikers, walkers, and even youngsters lounging on the small rock islands.

Once you reach Maximillianstrasse, cross the river to see the Maximillianeum, home to the state parliament and also a school for gifted students. Continue north along the river again until you reach Prinzregentenstrasse to view the Angel of Peace, a symbol of 25 years of peace after the Franco-German War .

Now head back across the river (back to the west side) and follow Prinzregentenstrasse all the way to Enlischer Gardens, Munich’s Central Park. Spot the city surfers, toss a frisbee, and stop for a beer and giant pretzel at the Chinesischer Turm.

Finally, make your way to the west side of the park and continue until you reach Ludwigstrasse. Walk south along this royal avenue passing by a university and the Bavarian library. Continue south on Theatinerstrasse and window shop with the stars at Prada, Gucci, and other high end retailers.

Finally, work east again along Schrammerstrasse which turns into Hofgraben and then Pfisterstrasse to land at your final destination, the Hofbrauhaus, Munich’s oldest brewery. Have a bier and a Bayrish meal before heading back to your hotel or the train station.
