Must Visit Places: Cayos Cochinos, Honduras

May 18, 2012 by

Nestled between the mainland of Honduras and the increasingly popular Honduran Bay Islands, Cayos Cochinos remains somewhat of an untouched paradise.

Cayos Cochinos is actually 13 small islands, or cays, which make up the natural coral reserve. Less touristy than the nearby Roatan, Utila and Guanaja islands, Cayos Cochinos is the perfect destination for those looking for sun, relaxation, and seclusion.

A number of luxury resorts and smaller hotels have made their mark on Cayos Cochinos, offering up a wide range of accommodations that all offer the same great ocean views.

Visitors to Cayos Cochinos can choose to get out into nature and explore, or simply relax on the beach with the sound of waves lapping nearby. Kayaking, hiking, scuba diving, snorkeling, swimming and fishing are all ways to pass the days in Cayos Cochinos.

Visitors can also expect to take in at least a little of the traditional Garifuna culture of Honduras while staying on Cayos Cochinos. By venturing into the towns of the cays, travelers can experience the culture of the friendly locals, complete with traditional food and dancing.

A night under the stars in Cayos Cochinos is definitely something to write home about.
