Quirky Ski Race

The Al Johnson uphill/downhill ski race is an event you don’t want to miss. This telemark ski race has been taking place every March for 39 years.

Competitors race up 600 vertical feet to the summit of Crested Butte Ski Resort and then descend down challenging double black runs. The event attracts hard core skiers and those just looking to join in the fun.

Racers don their most elaborate, exotic, comical, and often risqué costumes for this event, so you’re not just watching anyone ski, you’re watching Barney plow through powder, Tetris dropping sick lines, and the Easter Bunny ski the Last Steep.

Adding to the lure of the event, all profits go to local charities like the Crested Butte Avalanche Center and the Crested Butte Center for the Arts.

Feeling a little ambitious? Preregistration lasts until 2 weeks before the race. Only 200 lucky characters will get to join the fun.
