San Telmo Antique Market in Buenos Aires

May 10, 2012 by

Looking for a one-of-a-kind souvenir to remember Buenos Aires by? While the city is rife with boutiques, those in the know head to San Telmo for the Sunday antiques fair. Stroll along Defensa, where each week the stretch between Ave. Independencia and San Juan is blocked off for this outdoor market.

Head out early to find artists lining the avenue selling everything from handmade jewelry to bird whistles. Hunting for true antiques? Head to the heart of the market, Plaza Dorrego, where the antique vendors set up shop. While some vendors try to shine up junk to sell to tourists, there are some true treasures in the mix. Pick up a silver-footed mate gourd, an antique camera, or vintage jewelry.

And there’s more than just shopping. Cafes line the sidewalks, musicians perform acoustic, and a couple dances tango for tips at the corner of the square. Feeling hungry? Grab an empanada from a roaming street vendor and wash it down with some fresh squeezed orange juice.
