Snorkel the Underwater Trunk Bay Trail

Trunk Bay

For a small day-use fee, Trunk Bay offers one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and a 225-yard long underwater snorkeling trail complete with underwater signage to help identify what you’re seeing.

The beach features all the facilities you’ll need for a day trip to the beach including a bathhouse, snack bar, souvenir shop, and a rental shop where you can gear up for a day of snorkeling.

Trunk Bay

Part of a National Park

Trunk Bay is part of a national park that covers more than half of St. John Island and looks like something you’d expect to see on a postcard.

The bay is hemmed in by dense forests fringed with willowy coconut palms swaying in the tropical breeze. The beach features azure Caribbean waters, white sand, and the Trunk Bay Snorkel Trail. Here you’ll see 30 species of tropical fish, coral and even an occasional seat turtle, starfish, and even octopi.

Trunk Bay Underwater Snorkel Trail

The snorkel rental shop at Trunk Bay is open from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. and rents everything you need to snorkel the Trunk Bay Underwater Snorkel Trail. This includes masks, breathing tubes, and flippers. For those who want to snorkel for longer than that, there are several rental shops in nearby Cruz Bay where you can find snorkel gear available for longer.

Buoys mark the Underwater Snorkel Trail. It starts from the finger of land that reaches out toward the small island just offshore. Snorkelers should float horizontally to avoid trampling fragile coral or sea grass. To swim the trail, just follow the signs pointing out varieties of fascinating sea life.

Trunk Bay offers just one of many stunning beaches on the island of St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands, but Trunk Bay is the busiest because visitors are drawn to the combination of its white sand, turquoise water, verdant greenery and modern amenities and the unique underwater trail.
