Florida’s Grapefruit League

Florida’s Grapefruit League has been a draw to the sunshine state for 125 years. It all started when baseball players retreated to warmer weather to get into shape during the off season. Today, spring training games in Florida are played in 14 different locations starting in late February and most of March.

Florida’s March weather is perfect for vacation. Be sure to check the baseball schedule for an off day to take advantage of the beach, golf, shopping, and of course eating. Exactly where you stay will depend on the team you want see play.

The Twins and Red Sox play in Lee County, the Rays in Charlotte County, The Baltimore Orioles play a little further north in Sarasota, the Pittsburgh Pirates in Manatee, and two teams, the Phillies and Toronto Blue Jays, play in Pinellas County.

Ten different stadiums scattered throughout the Phoenix metropolitan area make attending spring training games convenient to hotels, dining, shopping as well as other attractions. Shopping includes unique boutiques, art galleries, antique shops, and more.

Cultural and outdoor activities include golf, biking, and hiking. For the adventurous, hot-air balloon rides are a perfect way to take in the scenic landscape of the Sonoran Desert. If you’re looking to make your stay a little extra-special, there are dozens of luxury resorts in the area, complete with spas.
