Perth Zoo

Perth Zoo may be small but it is a popular attraction with the distinction of being open every day since it opened back in 1898.

Now home to more than 11,000 animals, this zoo is found on the banks of the Swan River just minutes from the center of downtown Perth, Australia, where it welcomes more than 620,000 annual visitors each year. The zoo is accessible by ferry, bus, or on foot.

Visit Regions of the World

The animals housed at the Perth Zoo are grouped by regions including animals from Asia, Australia, Africa and the Americas. Plan to spend at least half-a-day to see everything Perth Zoo has to offer, but for the best experience, a full day allows you to make the most of your visit.

Visit the Asian Rainforest at Perth Zoo and see the Asian Elephants. If you time your visit right, a 10:00 a.m. presentation is offered at the Bull Elephant exhibit and is offered a second time at 1:45 p.m. at the Elephant Amphitheatre.

Among the Asian exhibits, guests will also enjoy learning about small-clawed otters which pair for life and live in family groups. Other Asian animals you can expect to see include the Komodo Dragon, Nepalese Red Panda, Sun Bear, and the Slow Lorises which are located in the nocturnal house.

The Australian region in the zoo is broken into categories. In the Australian Bushwalk area you’ll experience common dingoes, a variety of kangaroos, and other such animals you’d expect to see, but also features Koalas, Numbats, Quokkas, Short-beaked Echidna, and Tasmanian Devils.

The Australian Wetlands section introduces a whole new world of Australian wildlife. Along with the wide-range of water fowl, you’ll also be introduced to the frogs, crocodiles and the Western Swamp Tortoise of the wetlands.

Along with these areas, the zoo presents a large array of nocturnal animals in the nocturnal house, and an entire area devoted to reptiles as well as other birds including the Little Penguin, the Blue-winged Kookaburra, Lorikeets, and more.

In the African section, guests have the opportunity to visit animals of the great African Savannah including the cheetah, zebras, lions, giraffes, rhinoceros, and more. Other animal exhibits are offered in the lesser primates area and the main lake area where you’ll have the chance to witness the Black and White Ruffed Lemur.

The Americas

The Americas area of the Perth Zoo is not as extensive as other regions, but it does include South American primates and birds as well as the American alligator and red-eared sliders.

Along with animals, the zoo features a number of gardens including a butterfly garden, frog-friendly garden, reptile-friendly garden, and a garden equipped with nest boxes for native animals.
