Buck Shoals State park is a state park and recreation area located in the Helen, Georgia area. The park is offering “Women for the Woods at Buck Shoals” on Saturday, September 14, 2013.

In the past, events at this park were not widely attended by the public because until recently, it was only accessible by water. Recent improvements have provided improved access to this rustic location.

Class Activities Offered

The Women for the Woods at Buck Shoals event is a two-day event that includes a number of classes including:

  • Canoeing/kayaking: Grab a paddle and a personal flotation device and prepare to glide along the Upper Chattahoochee River. It offers miles of pristine waterway in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This class will also promote ethical land stewardship and conservation.
  • Hiking: This is the perfect opportunity for women who enjoy exploring the outdoors on foot. The park offers scenic hiking trails that feature varied flora and fauna.
  • Fly-fishing: Women are patient and intuitive which are traits needed to fly fish. If this is something that has always interested you, this class teaches the basics. Women will learn about equipment, casting techniques, and which flies to use.
  • Firearms 101: Instructors will teach women how to shoot safely and with confidence.
  • Medicinal Plants: Humans have used plants as medicine for thousands of years and Georgia is lucky enough to possess several varieties of these plants. Medicinal plants is a multi-faceted topic and the Women for the Woods class is a perfect opportunity to learn about them.

This is a great opportunity for women to share the great outdoors in the mountains of NE Georgia with other like-minded women. The price is $45 if paid before August 30; otherwise the cost is $50. The price includes a fire-cooked lunch.
