You Don’t Have to Be Rich to Rent Your Own Private Island

April 21, 2014 by

The words “private island” typically conjure up images of multi-millionaires jetting off in private planes. But you don’t have to be a rock star to vacation like one. Private island rentals can be an affordable getaway.

For $3,795 a week, guests can rent Pretty Joe Rock, a private tropical island just off of Marathon in the Florida Keys. Covering 5,000 square feet, the tiny island includes a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom private cottage.

Features include a screened front porch, covered deck, fully equipped kitchen with breakfast bar and an outdoor gas grill. In the master suite, relax in a Jacuzzi tub. And of course, the view—each room offers panoramic views of the Gulf of Mexico, even the shower which has a two-sided ocean view.

And just because you’re in a secluded paradise doesn’t mean you have to forgo your creature comforts. Since Pretty Joe Rock is located so close to the mainland, all utilities (like electricity and fresh water) are piped underwater to the island. A small power boat to get guests to and from the island is also included in the price of the rental.

When you’re not relaxing indoors, you can take walks on landscaped boardwalks that surround the home, surveying native vegetation like black mangroves, sea grapes and pitch apples. Wildlife enthusiasts will also enjoy their stay with dolphins, manatees, parrot fish, angel fish, pelicans and herons native to the area.

What a quirky little place. Sounds like a cute way to retreat from the world without going too far. Great if you were writing a novel and wanted to be secluded!
