Ithaa Undersea Restaurant

May 7, 2012 by

Located in the Maldives, 16 feet below sea level, Ithaa is the cure for the common dining experience. Ithaa, which means “pearl” in Dhivehi, opened its doors in 2005 to become the world’s first underwater restaurant.

With panoramic 180-degree views of reef and marine life, it’s a stunning backdrop for any special occasion meal. The restaurant seats 14 people and serves up Maldivian-Western fusion cuisine for lunch and dinner. And while the interior design may be simple, who needs luxe tablecloths when you can eat in the eclipse of a passing manta ray?

Wondering how diners get under the sea and in the restaurant? Don’t worry, you don’t need a scuba suit to eat here. Above water sits a thatched pavilion at the end of a jetty with a spiral staircase that leads the way.

A dinner for two here will cost a couple hundred dollars, so be sure to save your pennies. And don’t forget to make a reservation up to 14 days in advance—the limited seating means tables fill up quickly.

Ithaa is one of seven restaurants belonging to Conrad Maldives Rangali Island.
