If you’re a fan of all the talent shows on TV or enjoy listening to the Oldies but Goodies, you’ll love eating at Ellen’s Stardust Diner in New York City. The 1950s-60s themed diner located in the Midtown West, Theater District is best known for its singing waiters and waitresses.

Singing for Your Supper

You’ve heard the old adage about singing for your supper, right? At Ellen’s Stardust Diner, your server does the singing. In fact, all the staff takes turns singing.

From the time you walk in the door, the hostess will motion you to follow her as she sings you to the table. The staff not only has to be able to sing, but they also learn to deliver food to your table and take orders while singing with a microphone grasped in one hand.

While many of the staff hope to be “discovered” someday, they joke about the fact that at least they are already singing on Broadway. It’s a unique and entertaining setting, and definitely worth the visit.

The diner is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Holding true to its 50s-60s theme; Ellen’s Stardust Diner menu offers a number of selections with names reflecting the era. For instance, the Blue Suede Burger (Blue Suede Shoes) is topped with blue cheese and apple smoked bacon.

Other menu items are named after celebrities of the day. You’ll find Norman Rockwell’s Turkey Dinner, Sammy Davis Jr.’s Pork Chops, and Mickey Rooney Marsala to name a few.

Sweet Shoppe

Ellen’s Stardust Diner is also known for its dessert selections and their old fashioned milkshakes and malts served “in the can.” It’s not unusual for patrons to enjoy their meal and come back later for desserts and another rendition of their favorite songs from the waitstaff.
