Move over Philly cheesesteak. There’s a new celebrated sandwich in town. In case you missed it, DiNic’s roast pork sandwich recently took the title as best sandwich in America, named by Travel Channel’s Adam Richman (of Man V Food fame).
Richman traveled the country sampling 28 top sandwiches, from which he narrowed his choices down to three—the Yardbird from Slow’s in Detroit (a smoked chicken breast sandwich drenched in mustard sauce, tossed with sauteed mushrooms and cheddar cheese and topped with bacon) and a chicken conquistador sandwich from Zunzi’s in Savannah (chicken topped with Italian dressing and a “secret sauce,” along with tomatoes and lettuce, all piled on a baguette).
But top honors went to DiNic’s, with it’s roast pork sliced thin and marinated in juices, then topped with shards of extra-sharp provolone and sauteed, slightly bitter broccoli rabe, all placed on a seeded Carangi’s roll.
The sandwich is by no means new, being a local favorite for years. And debates about whether the sandwich tops famous local cheesesteaks as the best sandwich in the city have been happening long before film crews ever showed up.
Travelers wanting to try the newly-crowned sandwich can visit DiNic’s, housed in Reading Terminal Market, a 60,000 square-foot foodie mecca comprised of almost 80 vendors. But be prepared to queue up—the title is sure to attract lines.
