From the outside, the Splendido Restaurant easily blends in with other storefronts on the block. You’ll find this contemporary Canadian restaurant in the heart of downtown Toronto.
While it might be easy to pass up if you’re not looking for it, this is one restaurant worth keeping your eyes open for. While it can tend to be on the pricey side, dishes are created here with traditional and modernist techniques and are served with great attention to presentation and taste.
The Splendido Restaurant has been open for a couple of decades, but was bought by Chefs Victor Barry and Carlo Catallo four years ago. The new owners have striven to keep the restaurant relevant, and since taking over have built a thriving craft cocktails scene at the front bar.
They have also found the right blend of fine dining to attract baby boomers and business diners who appreciate the private dining room downstairs known as the Cellar where diners are surrounded by the restaurant’s vast wine collection. It’s also considered a fun place to eat which appeals to the younger crowd.
In the spring of 2013, Catallo and Barry decided the time was right to test receptiveness for the future of more fine dining in Toronto. Splendido started serving Sunday brunch to reach a whole new audience, and the idea was well-received.
Crowds filled the restaurant’s approximately 70 seat capacity, and since then the brunch has earned a reputation as one of the city’s most self-indulgent. For $35, patrons get a wide range of foods starting with flaky, warm, house croissants served with preserves, pate, and Manchego cheese.
Enjoy main courses which include items like an egg white omelet, brioche French toast topped with Bananas Foster, Lemon Mascarpone, or Vanilla Anglaise, and much more.
While the dinner menu offers pricier options, if you choose carefully you can find big flavor for less. If you have a hard time making up your mind, experience a taste of some of the more expensive options by ordering the tasting menu. A comprehensive wine list also complements the menu with over 1,000 wines selected from the Old and New World.
