Scheffau Ski Resort: Warming Eats and Cold Brews

February 18, 2013 by

Scheffau Resort is the largest contiguous ski resort in Austria. It will leave you with sore legs and a voracious appetite. Fortunately, they’ve got you covered.

Before you leave the mountain, get some hidden powder turns in the trees behind the crowded Bergrestaurant, and rest your legs at Neualm (pronounced “New-em”) hut. Here you can warm up before your last run with homemade Goulashsuppe (meat and dumpling soup).

If you need something a little heartier, try the Spinatnudeln (spinach noodle). Don’t forget to reward your hard work with a “Weiseraddler,” a light beer mixed with Sprite. Expect to pay 3-4 Euro for food and 2-4 Euro for brews. The food is delicious and the prices are good.

When you’re nice and toasty, ski your way down to the main parking lot via run number 61. Drank too many Dunkles (dark beer)? You can still get down. Hop on the midway station on gondola number 61/62 and stay warm all the way to the bottom.

For those sore legs, you can stay at one of six hotels at the Scheffau base that provide a hot tub or sauna.

Lift tickets cost 42.50 Euro. Kids under 15 ski free.

If you’re not a skier, try winter hiking, tobogganing, or paragliding to fill your adrenaline needs.
