Lack of coverage abroad extends to Medicare and Medicaid, too. They don’t cover medical treatment outside of the United States. To cover an unexpected illness or injury while overseas, short-term international travel medical insurance plans are designed to protect you on your trip at a relatively low cost.

Typical single-trip medical travel coverage ranges from $40-$80. Cost is based on the length of your trip, your age, and medical and evacuation limits. Unlike regular traveler insurance, most medical insurance for travel does not cover trip cancelation, interruption, delay, or baggage loss. They are meant to cover needs of travelers while abroad who need medical coverage to protect them while overseas.

Check with Your Insurance Company

Before you purchase international travel medical insurance, be sure to check with your own insurance company to learn exactly what coverage you already have. Some policies cover medical needs abroad. If you’re one of the lucky ones who are covered, you won’t need to consider a separate policy for travel medical insurance.
