It’s one of the top ten — maybe even top five — iconic images that spring to mind when the topic of American landmarks comes up. Its span from end to end runs nearly 9,000 feet, and it reaches more than 700 feet skyward.

The bright orange structure known as the Golden Gate Bridge was originally erected in 1933, and opened to the public in 1937; after 56 years of being pummeled by saltwater-laced winds from the ocean nearby, though, the bridge’s pedestrian handrail began to disintegrate, and thus, a bit of reconstruction was needed.

Per the Golden Gate Furniture Company’s website: “One afternoon in 1994, a San Francisco television station did a news story on the fate of the Golden Gate Bridge steel that was removed during the handrail replacement in 1993. Richard Bulan, who was born in San Francisco and raised in the Bay Area, thought it would be great to have a headboard made from the historical steel.”

After procuring a piece of it and spending a month laboring over the project, much to the interest of friends who began requesting more of the same for themselves, the Golden Gate Bridge Furniture Company was born.

Now an operational furniture store offering a full collection of headboards, accent tables, lamps and more, the brand gives locals and tourists alike the opportunity to take a piece one of the most beautiful bridges in the world home with them.

Owning a piece of the Bay area landmark declared one of the Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers? That’s a souvenir to end all souvenirs.
