Store Brand Sunscreens Among the Best

July 4, 2013 by

How does your sunblock rate?

We are the kind of people who like to buy the best for the least. The price and brand does not always mean a product is the best. When we read about a new report in Consumer Reports that takes a look at which sunblock products are best at blocking UVA and UVB rays, three of the four top scorers were from national chains.

Perfect timing as the weather turns hot and sunny and we head to the pool, beach, or on vacation.

Equate sunblock

Walmart’s Equate brand ranked #2.

Not All Sunblocks Measure Up to LabelsĀ

The report warned that we can’t always depend on the SPF number on a label to measure it’s protection from burning. Two of the products they tested were poor at protecting against sunburn from UVB rays which cause cancer, and another was only fair at protecting from UVA which ages our skin.

This is one more example that we as consumers need to be proactive. If we don’t want to pay more than we should and we want a product that does what we expect, we have to take the time to do a little research. Consumer Reports helps with that. In this test, they found the sunscreens that performed the worst were among those that cost the most.

Top 4 Sunscreens

Of the top four best performing sunscreens, three of them came from national chains including: Target, Walmart, and Walgreens. Target’s Up and Up Sports SPF 50 came in first place, with Walmart’s Equate Ultra Protection Sunscreen SPF 50 at number 2 and Walgreen’s Continuous Spray Sports SPF 50 at number 4.

The name brand that came in third was Coppertone Water Babies 50 lotion.

Walgreen's sunblock

Walgreen’s brand ranked #3.

Before you stock up on sunscreen for the summer, be sure to check out the report. All of the sunscreens tested were labeled “broad spectrum.”

It’s important to protect your skin and just as important to know the sunblock you buy will do what you think it will. Once you buy your sunblock, wear it and don’t forget to reapply every two hours, after swimming, or if you sweat a lot.
