Virgin Galactic the Next Step in Travel: Sub-orbital Space

March 11, 2014 by

Virgin Galactic Travel

Virgin Galactic is on the cusp of offering a new mode of traffic to the world’s super rich by heading for outer space. With plans to be the world’s first commercial spaceline, this new mode of travel will involve sub-orbital space travel which means the craft breaches space but does not launch into orbit.

The company made its third rocket powered test flight in January of 2014, via Virgin Galactic’s Space Ship Two and while they haven’t breached space yet, they are very close.

First Commercial Space Line

Virgin Galactic is the world’s first commercial spaceline and is owned by Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group and Abu Dhabi’s aabar Investments PJS.

While they aren’t quite in the space travel business yet, they have completed their third supersonic flight involving their passenger-carrying space vehicle. This reusable “space vehicle” now sports a newly installed thermal protection coating on the tail booms, and during this test flight successfully completed all test objectives.

Sir Richard Branson commented on the successful January flight saying “I couldn’t be happier to start the New Year with all the pieces visibly in place for the start of full space flights. 2014 will be the year when we will finally put our beautiful spaceship in her natural environment of space.”

The goal is to start a commercial service in 2014 and as of now they are on target to meet that goal. To date, they have accepted over $70 million in deposits from almost 600 people.

The space vehicles will allow “tourist astronauts” to enjoy an out-of-the-seat, zero-gravity experience along with breathtaking views of the planet from the black sky of space. The aerodynamic design of the craft as well as the laws of physics allows for a heat-free re-entry followed by a glide runway landing.
