What’s in Your Travel Beauty Bag, Tara?

Editor’s Note: We asked our writers to put together a list of their favorite beauty items while traveling. Now, we’re sharing all their travel-savvy wisdom with you. Check back each week to see a new list of beauty items our writers won’t leave home without.

My travel beauty regimen is more about minimizing size and weight than staying true to old favorites. If it comes in a travel size, I’ll try it! My usual beauty routine goes out the window in favor of whatever samples I have on hand, hotel bathroom amenities, you name it. But there are a few reliable beauty products that always make it into my travel makeup bag:

A Good Lip Balm. I’m addicted to lip balm on the best of days. Throw in the extra-dry air of airplanes and hotel rooms, and lip balm becomes even more of a necessity. I’ve tried just about every brand, and my favorite is Dessert Essence (from the health food store or most online drugstores). Nivea makes a good drugstore brand.

Pure Aloe Vera. Not just for sunburn, aloe vera gel is a one-item health and beauty wonder. Use it on bug bites, razor burn, or chafing and blisters. Use it as a light moisturizer for face and body. You can even use it as low-hold hair gel. Just be sure to look for the 100% pure versions — added alcohol is not your friend.

Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer. This beauty editor favorite is a perfect travel multi-tasker: just one step for light moisture, SPF 20 sunscreen, and enough color to smooth your complexion. And the plastic tube is indestructible in your bag.

Lola Lipstick. I love Lola lipstick for its flattering colors and non-drying formula, but the case makes this brand a real star for travel. Open the tube, and a small mirror flips up automatically for touch-ups anywhere on the go. It’s a bit hard to find, but available on the Lola website, Zappos, or occasional sales on cosmetics sites or eBay.

Whatever’s in My Birchbox. I gather sample-sized products anywhere I can get them, but my monthly Birchbox sample box is the most reliable source by far. All those little travel-sized beauties go directly into my travel bag, ready for the next trip. You can read more about it here.

I just recently discovered tinted moisturizers, and I’m never going back! Lighter than foundation, they give skin a soft hint of color and some smoothing and even sunscreen. A beauty trifecta, for sure.
