August Vacation Best Month for Budget Minded

May 13, 2013 by

Summer is almost here and many people can’t wait for that much needed vacation. For the budget minded who want to try to stretch their vacation dollar a little further, patience and flexibility might just pay off in better deals.

According to Priceline.com airline tickets are predicted to be up about 1% from last year at the same time, but they suggest waiting to travel in June or August this year for the best value.

Be Flexible and Save

Hotwire.com, a leading discount travel site, concurs with Priceline saying that August looks like it will be the “most affordable month to fly.”

However, it’s not that clear cut. Summer trends are still developing, but “to save the most on travel this summer, it really depends on where you’re going and how you’re planning to get there. With a little flexibility and some insider travel information, all of us should be able to book a summer trip and score some great savings at the same time.”

Car rental

Car rental rates are up 7% over last year.

Car Rentals

While that’s the good news, the bad news is that car rentals are up by about 7% over last year. Hotwire blames the rise on consolidation as the industry reduces the size of their fleets. To get the best deal on car rentals, Hotline suggests traveling on Fridays and Saturdays for the lowest prices.

When you book your rental, check with the agent to see if you can save by extending the rental to include an entire week. It also pays to call different rental locations, because prices do vary from one to another.

Depending on the model and age of your car, you may want to consider driving your own car and forgoing a rental. If you decide to do that, be sure to have your oil changed, if needed, and make sure you are up-to-date on car maintenance.

Include a check of your tire pressure to be sure you get the best gas mileage, too.

The bottom line is, if you want to get the most for your dollar, plan to vacation in August if possible. If not, June makes a good second choice.
