This year the Horse Thief Lake Campground and RV Resort opens on May 15. This popular site provides an affordable place to stay just a few miles northwest of Mount Rushmore in South Dakota.
This family-owned and operated campground and resort is ideally situated in the Black Hills National Forest which encompasses almost 1.25 million acres of rugged rock formations, canyons, gulches, and open grassland parks, streams, lakes and unique caves.

The camp itself features camp sites that accommodate tents, trailers, and for those who prefer, they have camping cabins that sleep 5 to 10 people.
The grounds feature a heated outdoor pool, bathhouse, playground for the kids, picnic areas, vault toilets, drinking water, laundry facilities, and a store. Roads are paved, but electric hookups are not available. Wireless Internet is provided by satellite.

Nature lovers and fitness enthusiasts who enjoy the outdoors will find plenty to do while camping at Horse Thief. Wildlife abounds in the area.
Bird species campers can expect to see include bald eagles, hawks, osprey, peregrine falcons, and hundreds more species in the forest, along streams, lakes, and rivers.
Bighorn sheep also make their home in this mountainous terrain, and in the forest and prairies pronghorn, elk, and deer often gather.
Hikers and mountain bikers can take advantage of the many trails in the area, or campers can kickback and enjoy a day of fishing.
Nearby attractions include the Mount Rushmore National Memorial.
Here visitors will not only see the sculpture carved into the granite face of Mount Rushmore, but will have the opportunity to learn about the birth, development, and preservation of the United States as they enjoy the natural beauty of South Dakota’s Black Hills.
Another popular nearby attraction is Jewel Cave. This is the second longest cave in the world stretching for 159.29 miles. Visitors will enjoy seeing rare formations, and some of the largest concentrations of passageways in the world. The cave itself features sparkling calcite crystals.
Other possible day trips include Custer State Park, Crazy Horse Monument and Wind Cave National Park.
